Hello lovelies!
Today was a beautiful Tuesday in South Florida, but the summer heat is on us. It’s a given that regardless of the time of year, you should be wearing sunscreen. I’ll be honest and say that I have barely used sunscreen in my skincare regimen. I know, I know. It’s terrible, not only because I just got Ultherapy done, but because using sunscreen is constantly hailed as the number one preventative measure for hyperpigmentation, anti-aging, skin cancer, fine lines and wrinkles, and more.
I watched a video about preventing collagen breakdown and decided to really go on the hunt for a good sunscreen. From a quick consult with my good friend Google, I found Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen. Fast forward to this past Saturday, I went on a boat ride for a friend’s birthday and lo and behold! She had the exact same sunscreen! I used it without any problems on Saturday and my skin felt fine.
On Sunday, I did notice more bumps on my face and a rash on my chest, upper arms, and hands which I simply chalked off as being a heat rash and regular acne. I didn’t experience any greasiness, pilling (when the sunscreen balls up), and I was able to easily wash the product off without problems. It’s also fragrance-free, oil free, and weightless. So therefore, on Sunday afternoon, I dropped by my local Sephora and picked one up. Before I even started up the engine in the car, I slathered a layer of sunscreen on my face and hands, literally just to drive home.
Now, Monday, I notice the bumps on my hands and face have become more prominent. My face was a bit irritated but I still figured it was due to a breakout or heat rash, so I use it again on Monday. Come the end of Monday, my face is pretty red, many more bumps are visible and I begin o think that it’s cause by a reaction to the sunscreen. When I apply my nighttime skin care, the products kin of made my skin tingle and itch.
The last day I used Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen was on Tuesday morning. Yes, my skin is irritated, but I use the sunscreen to confirm that it’s the cause of the irritation and well….. my skin was not happy by the end of Tuesday. I looked like a bumpy ass tangerine. Mind you, the span of time now is just from Sunday afternoon to Tuesday afternoon.
So, my review is that I’m allergic to something in the formula of Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen and I’m going to have to return it. It just didn’t work with my skin at all. I will say though that Unseen Sunscreen is a chemical sunscreen, meaning that the active ingredients that block ultra-violet radiation/energy are chemicals. When UV light strikes those chemicals, they absorb the UV rays and convert that energy to thermal energy. That means that chemical sunscreens release thermal energy on the surface of the skin when exposed to UV radiation. I don’t if that’s what consistently irritated my skin or if some other ingredients did, but Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen is just not for me.
It’s now Thursday, and since I have stopped using Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen, my face is still bit irritated and my skin is still bumpy (and it’s quite a bit drier than usual). I definitely would say to ask for a sample first and patch test on your wrist to see if you have a negative reaction.
I hope this review helps anyone considering purchasing the sunscreen or any other type of sunscreen. I remember watching this video by Dr. Dray and she actually recommended physical sunscreens over chemical sunscreens. I used to use Eucerin Daily Protection Face Lotion. It’s lightweight but can get greasy as I apply it throughout the day. See my review of the sunscreen here!
